On lui brosse les dents.
   Le lion !
Quand il ferme les yeux,
Il revoit la savane.

Back from Germany

I just got back from Germany where I enjoyed visiting Berlin and Frankfurt with a friend from Canada. Monday and today were beautiful, sunny days which helped appreciate the tour!

Bicycling in Berlin was a lot of fun, going up to the Alexander Platz TV Tower as well.

But to me Berlin seemed really a place dedicated to memory: memory of the war, memory of the country's partition and the famous Wall, memory of the Shoah of course. It is amazing how many monuments, memorials and sculptures one finds, each having a precise symbolic value.

Here are just a few examples of what we came upon in less than a day:
- The Shoah memorial, incredibly large and the result of ten years of reflection.
- In front of the Reichstag, a memorial to the 96 members of the Parliament deported by the nazis, indicating for each one the prison or concentration camp in which they died.
- Streches of the Wall.
- The Reichstag's modern cuppola emerging from the old building (I didn't see the exhibition inside unfortunately).
- Visiting the "New Synagogue" (inaugurated in 1866, destroyed, not by the nazis but by allied bombings, in 1943), one can walk in the front part and go up to the cuppola seeing exactly what was left after the war and what is new, while the rear of the building, where the services where held, is now a courtyard with the pillars and the choir hinted on the ground.
- Near the KaDeWe department store, just outside an U-Bahn station, a list of the concentration camps on a post. Why there? No idea but there must be a reason.

I think Germany could bring a lot of its experience about how to preserve memory to Cambodia: but of course the amounts of money that can be dedicated to that here and there are not comparable.

I hope I can settle down a little bit with my parents and rest now that I'm back in Paris.

Geometry according to Taiwan

There is Euclidian geometry where the shortest path between any two given points is a straight line.

There is the geometry of the sphere where the shortest path between any two given points is a "geodesic", i.e. the smallest part of the "great" circle which passes through this point.

Then there is the geometry according to Eva Air. It assimilates the Earth to a sphere with a big hole, that some people call Mainland China (others call it PRC). As a result, the route between Taipei and Paris is a straight line from Taipei to the Korean Peninsula and then the geodesic.

I realized that, when we took off towards East and then, instead of turning around, headed North. In the Eva Air in-flight magazine, Paris is stated as 6,096 miles (9,810 km) and 13:30 hours away from Taipei compared to San Francisco which is 6,450 miles (10,380 km) and only 11:30 hours away from Taipei. Notice that flying 350 miles more takes two hours less.

In other words, hostility between Taiwan and China induces the plane into a 1,500 mile detour!

Anyway, I landed safely in Paris just in time to meet at the airport a friend who had taken off with Thai Airways 5 hours after me...

Paris is as beautiful as always, the Parisians almost as disagreeable as usual, more soon.

Formose

A bit "lost in translation", I've just arrive to the Chang Kai-Shek airport...

The airport is very quiet except for the place I found with free
Internet access which has loud music. Otherwize, it's empty corridors
and customer-less duty free shops with sleepy staff checking their
watches for the time to go home. It's only 8pm though...

After hearing much about Ho Chi Minh, Mao and of course the Khmer
Rouge, I'm now in the country of Chang Kai-Shek. How does it feel? I
couldn't say. I guess it must be really interesting to compare Taiwan
and (mainland) China but all I can see of Taiwan right now is an
airport with reproductions from the museum and a handicraft shop
selling "indegenous" pieces...

Now what about leaving Cambodia? I'm not inspired to write much
either. Obviously it's more in the days and hours before the flight
that the feeling is strongest. And of course since I will be back in
just over a month, I don't have to worry about everything I haven't
done yet or wonder if I should stay more... This will be for January
14...

My motodops may be my best friends in town: they like me (or my daily
1,500 riels?), especially the lady, the only female motodop in Phnom
Penh as far as I know, who has chosen the street corner where I live
as her waiting spot. She told four or five times "I miss you so much,
be well and good luck!"

I hired her and a younger man as my motodops to drive me to the
airport: a lot more fun than taking a cab or being driven by someone!
Except when it starts raining on the way. Well, the heavy rain started
only 1 or 2 minutes away from the terminal, there shouldn't be any
dammage. I have quite a lot of luggage : a 6kg backpack for

["sorry we're closing" says the guy...]

So have a nice time everybody, I should be boarding in 3 hours and
something then a 13 and a half hour flight and I should land at
Charles de Gaulle!

Best wishes

Joseph

D-2 ... buying souvenirs

I spent an impressive 52 USD on souvenirs yesterday, buying... well you'll see!
If you need anything special from Cambodia, please tell me quickly, I can still buy stuff on Wednesday before my flight!

08 September 2006

Last Friday in Phnom Penh in the year 5766

On Wednesday, I'm flying to what I may call home, Paris. So this Sabbath will be the last of 5766 I spend here, I will be with my parents for next Sabbath and the Hagim!

I'm coming back to Phnom Penh on October 16-17th for three months to continue working on the IT of the Audiovisual Resource Center which will be officially named "Bophana" soon. It's a reference to several things, among others to Rithy Panh's movie "Bophana, une tragédie cambodgienne".

Wishing all my readers who celebrate the Jewish New Year a happy and healthy New Year 5767, to all indiscriminately my warmest thanks for reading part or all of 8-months' worth of trivia, anecdotes and thoughts from Cambodia.

(TLF)

Avez-vous d'autres bons exemples ?

D-9 it's moving closer once more

Dear all,

The countdown is once again ticking. Not the same kind of countdown because I will say "Au revoir" to Cambodia like Valéry Giscard d'Estaing to the French in 1981, not "Adieu".

Nevertheless I will have to pack, buy souvenirs and celebrate next weekend before flying on Wednesday next week and hopefully landing in Paris-Charles de Gaulle airport early on Thursday morning.

I'll try to post the rest of the pictures of Battambang later today!

All the best,

Joseph

Battambang 1/2

Let's introduce Battambang, with this picture of a typical, calm street, close to the former Governor's Residence

Here's the former Governor's Residence

A detail

An other detail

In the seemingly abandoned place (it's not abandoned but today's Sunday morning...) a woman harvests herbs in the garden of the Residence

Battambang is on a river, here's a nice view of one of the few bridges.

An other view of the riverside

Sometimes, non-locals walk by. From right to left, Anne, Lida and Marin

The Market is quite remarkable

Other view of the Market

Two little girls look on while we drive by

Who is "we"? You've already met Anne, Lida and Marin. Only one person was missing: here is Fabien!

Before going around Battambang, we paid a visit to "Phare" the NGO which has a large complex with a school and a Circus with classes in painting as well. Here is one of their nice buildings...

... and here is the big top (chapiteau), like something coming from an other world

Inside the big top, working hard to prepare for the next show

Children play at the entrance to the acrobat training hall (high enough for the trapeze!)

That's all folks for now!

/usr/local/bin/unison -backups -batch -force ssh://smbbackup@preahream//partage/public -group -log -logfile /var/log/unison/unison.partage.`date --iso-8601=minutes`.log -maxbackupage 60 -maxbackups 4 -numericids -owner -servercmd /usr/local/bin/unison -times ssh://smbbackup@preahream//partage/public /partage/public
